Alternators and Starter Motors
The alternator in your vehicle does two things; It keeps the electrical system running and charges the battery. If your alternator stops working it will no longer charge the battery preventing the car from starting. Alternators can suddenly fail but there are often signs that it is beginning to fail:
- You may notice that your headlights brightness changing.
- May produce a squealing noise
- The battery warning light on your dashboard may come on.
The Starter Motor is a an electrical motor that cranks the engine to get it started. They are often buried deep in the engine and are difficult to get at. Some signs that your starter motor may be at fault, other than the car not starting are:
- A clicking Noise
- A whirring Sound
Your exhaust is a vital component on your vehicle; it helps to keep the engine running smoothly and the fumes away from the occupants. If you are suffering from rattling, excessive noise, smoke or have noticed corrosion of your exhaust system you should get it checked by an experienced mechanic.
The head gasket lives between your engine block and cylinder head. All modern cars have this gasket but they vary in their thickness and construction based on the manufacturer’s design of the engine. The head gasket seals the combustion chamber allowing your engine to build the proper compression and contain exhaust gases, it also keeps coolant and oil out of the combustion chamber.
Some Signs that your head gasket has gone:
- White smoke from the exhaust pipe
- Bubbles in the radiator or coolant overflow tank
- Overheating engine
- White milky oil
- Fouled spark plugs
